Blue Star Memorial Marker Dedication

GARDEN CLUB OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
BLUE STAR MEMORIAL MARKER

The Garden Club of Indian River County, in cooperation with the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, and the City of Vero Beach, and with the support of the Veterans Council of Indian River County, dedicated the first Blue Star Memorial Marker to be installed in Indian River County on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 2:00PM at the northeast corner of City Hall. The marker’s name commemorates the blue star in the center of the red and white service flags first used during World War I which were placed in the windows or on the front of homes to denote a family member was serving in the military abroad.

In 1946, the National Garden Clubs, Inc. adopted a nationwide Blue Star Memorial Highway Program as a tribute to the men and women serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. The program was subsequently endorsed by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. In 1996 another marker, identical to the Blue Star Highway Marker but without the word “Highway” was instituted for Veterans Administration facilities, National Cemeteries, and other civic locations. Over 3,000 markers have been dedicated across the country since the Blue Star Memorial Marker Program was created.

The public is invited to attend what is sure to be a moving and inspiring dedication ceremony.
